NEW: Sale of livestock at household level banned

Government has barred the sale of livestock at the household level to ensure farmers are not short-changed by buyers this drought season.

In a statement, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Professor Obert Jiri, said sales of livestock will now be done through ward-based business unit cattle sale pens.

“In response to panic livestock sales, the Government declares that no sales will be conducted at the household level, but through the ward-based business unit cattle sale pens to ensure a win-win situation between the farmers and buyers/abattoirs,” he said.
