NEW: Salesman in court for US$100k theft

A salesman at a Harare-based company has appeared in court after reportedly stealing cash and gadgets worth US$100 000 from his employer, before being arrested after a year on the run.

The suspect, Tawanda Katatyi (29) of 15 Open Way Street in Southerton, Harare, was employed at a shop located at 11 George Silundika Avenue as a salesman.

The shop is owned by Mr Amhed Naveed.

Prosecutor Ms Ruvimbo Matyatya told the court that from January 1, 2021 to February 7, 2021 the accused stole property that included television sets and cash valued at US$100 000 after manipulating receipts.

He arrested on February 9 this year after a year on the run.

Magistrate Mrs Yeukai Dzuda remanded Katatyi in custody to February 28.

The total value of goods and cash recovered so far is US$5 422.
