At least 5 920 people in Masvingo will soon benefit from the recently launched Seeds for the Future initiative, which seeks to improve food security, dietary diversity and nutrition.
The project, which is being funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, will run for three years.
Speaking during the launch on Wednesday, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Deputy Minister Vangelis Haritatos said the project is another step towards food self-sufficiency.
“Seed security is of paramount importance to my ministry and a major factor towards the realisation of food self-sufficiency,” he said.
“Unwavering support is guaranteed through the construction of two community seedbanks in Mashava.
“We are also upgrading the Shashe Agroecological School as a centre for excellence for farmer field training.”
The project also aims to improve traditional seed development for millet, sorghum, rapoko, cowpeas and bambara nuts, among others.
