The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested seven people in connection with the smuggling of four tonnes of chicken cuts into the country.
Authorities also impounded the truck used to transport the contraband.
The arrests followed a tip-off to ZACC officials about a truck carrying smuggled chicken cuts enroute to Harare.
Acting swiftly, officials intercepted the vehicle at Mahusekwa turn-off on the Harare-Masvingo Road in Mashonaland East province, leading to the immediate apprehension of the suspects.
The smuggled meat has since been destroyed at the Marondera dumping site.
ZACC’s manager for investigations, Mr Lovemore Findi, commended the public for their role in exposing the illicit activity.
“On Sunday, we received a tip-off from a whistleblower about a consignment of smuggled meat that had entered the country through Beitbridge Border Post,” he said. “We immediately deployed a team to intercept the shipment, successfully stopping it at Mahusekwa turn-off just before the Harare tollgate.
“With the assistance of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), we apprehended seven individuals linked to the smuggling operation. We appreciate the public’s cooperation in providing vital information that led to these arrests.”
ZACC has reiterated its commitment to curbing corruption and smuggling activities, urging citizens to continue reporting suspicious activities to aid law enforcement efforts.
