AT least six more cyclones could hit Zimbabwe during the current rainy season, and Government is putting in place measures to protect the public from natural disasters.
While officiating at the handover ceremony of equipment worth US$226 000 to the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) in Harare on Wednesday, Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo said this underscores the “importance of robust mechanisms for monitoring natural phenomena”.
Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Deputy Minister Barbara Rwodzi said the country was prepared to deal with the vagaries of adverse weather conditions.
“We are more than ready together with other partners,” she said.
“We are working together with local companies and communities to raise awareness and make them ready.
“It is unfortunate at the moment we don’t know how aggressive the cyclones will be or the areas that would be affected.”
The equipment – procured through the Post-Cyclone Idai Emergency Recovery Project by the African Development Bank – included digital barometers, two automatic weather stations, digital thermometers, standard gauge and measuring cylinders.
