ORGANISERS of the basketball tournament held at Mutare Boys’ High courts last week on Saturday to raise awareness on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) have described the event as a success.
The contest, which was organised by local giants of the game Mercenaries and Manicaland Basketball Association, attracted at least 10 male teams and two female sides.
Spokesperson of the the initiative Innocent “Stolz” Sithole said sport has the power to make a huge difference and positive impact in fighting social vices.
“We are happy that the games fulfilled the purpose. The primary purpose of this tournament was to sensitise communities on the need to combat gender-based violence.
“As much as sport unifies, it can also be used as a tool for social development. We all have a role to play in stemming this scourge and we are contributing to that through such games as part of our social responsibility,” said Sithole.
He added that they will organise and host more similar events in the future as a way of fighting other social ills like drug and substance abuse.
Another tournament dubbed “Basketball Against Drugs” is slated for January 3 at Dangamvura Community courts.
