ADOPTION of smart farming practices is key to enhance productivity and food security in the face of climate change.

Agricultural Advisory and Rural Development Services acting director of crop production Mr Leonard Munamati believes some traditional farming practices can no longer guarantee for food security.

“Climate change is a reality and it is clear that some of our current farming practices are no longer enough. We now need to consider smart farming practices,” he said.

Smart farming encompasses a wide range of strategies, technologies and initiatives that leverage on cutting-edge innovation to optimise resource utilisation, reduce negative environmental impact and maximise yields.

“By integrating technology into agriculture, we can monitor and manage our farms in real-time, make data-driven decisions and implement precision farming techniques that maximise waste and enhance efficiency,” said Mr Munamati.

Experts say transformative farming practices can mitigate the impact of drought.

“These systems entail that farmers deliver the right amount of water to crops at the right time, significantly reducing water wastage and optimising usage,” he said.

“The integration of climate-smart agricultural practices is a crucial point where we involve the use of resilient crop varieties, soil conservation techniques and the implementations of agroforestry systems.”

Government is adopting the use of advanced technologies to boost both production and productivity.
