A new Sport and Recreation Commission board is expected to be in place at the end of this month.
Andrew Langa, the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture who last month oversaw the successful running of the Region 5 Youth Games, said names have already been compiled for onward submission to President Mugabe.

“We’ve compiled the list of possible candidates. The list will be submitted to His Excellency President Mugabe for approval,” said Langa.

He said the list was of men and women of integrity who were expected to add value to Zimbabwean sport as well as take it to the next level.

The present board is headed by former National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe secretary-general Edward Siwela who replaced top Bulawayo lawyer Joseph James who stepped down in June last year.

“The new board should create the right environment for the corporate sector to want to partner with sport. The government is committed to improving sport in the country and the board is expected to assist in this regard,” said Langa.

The Minister said the new SRC board was expected to immediately attend to challenges facing Zifa.

“All has not been going well there. We read regularly about disagreements among themselves, that’s not good so we want the SRC to deal with Zifa so that there’s a positive way forward once and for all,” said Minister Langa.

Minister Langa said soon after the re-election of Cuthbert Dube and his executive, he met them and gave the executive some guidelines to follow.

He said he was therefore disappointed that the executive had not followed the guidelines.

Minister Langa said there was a lot of potential in Zimbabwe sport and what was needed was patriotism as evidenced by the men and women who worked day and night to make the Africa Union Sports Council Region 5 Games a success.

The nation awaits with hope that the new SRC board will have result-oriented personalities who will play a positive role to develop sport.
