THE Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture will soon announce a new Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) board that will take over from the Joseph James’ led one.In an interview with Chronicle Sport last Friday, the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Andrew Langa said his ministry will be announcing the board soon, hinting that it could be as early this week.

“We will be announcing a new board very soon,” said Minister Langa.

The present SRC board was appointed in 2013 by then Minister of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture, David Coltart. There is a possibility that all the board members will be booted out after inviting the wrath of Minister Langa after all but one board member attended a football indaba that was held in the capital a few months ago. Minister Langa immediately threatened to dissolve the board as he felt undermined.

The SRC was created by an Act of Parliament in 1991 after a report by the commission of inquiry into the organisation of sport in Zimbabwe. As result of the findings of the commission of inquiry the then Sports Council was dissolved to pave way for the Sport and Recreation Commission.

The SRC derives its mandate from the Sport and Recreation Commission Act and reports to the government through the Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture. Part of the mandate of the SRC is to facilitate for the accessibility of sport and recreation programmes to the people of Zimbabwe and to oversee the general running of sport and recreation programmes by the National Sports Associations.

In overseeing the running of the sport and recreation programmes in the country the SRC is guided by the Sport and Recreation Commission Act Chapter 25:15 of 1991 and the Statutory instrument 342 of 1995. The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture is also responsible for appointing the Board of Commissioners comprising not less than eight but not more than 12 members.
