NEW: Stiff penalties for land barons

GOVERNMENT has declared war on land barons, who it blames for the proliferation of informal settlements around the country.

Speaking at the recent 41st Shelter Afrique annual general meeting in Victoria Falls last week, National Housing and Social Amenities Minister Daniel Garwe said there will be stiff penalties for illegally parcelling out State land.

“We are fully aware of an animal that we call land barons. These people are selling land, primarily State land, to unsuspecting home-seekers or beneficiaries.

“That is the basis of informal or irregular settlements in Zimbabwe,” he said.

“Government has declared war on land barons and that war is very vicious. Anyone found selling land that does not belong to him or her is a good candidate for imprisonment.”
