CASES of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) have significantly increased in the diamond-mining area of Chiadzwa amid reports of an influx of artisanal miners, popularly referred to in that area as magweja.

Speaking during a media tour organised by National Aids Council (NAC), development partner, Population Solutions for Health (PSH) Clinical Services coordinator, Mr Maxwell Madyauta confirmed the increase in STI cases in Chiadzwa.

Mr Madyauta said they are now deploying different interventions to combat the situation.

“We have had an increase in cases of STIs in Chiadzwa, ostensibly because of the influx of artisanal miners in that area. This is a recent observation which we have made.

“In fact, we have started using different intervention methods such as distribution of condoms to ensure that we arrest the situation. We have gathered that at times they run out of condoms so we are always making efforts to be on top the situation,” said Mr Madyauta.
