NEW: Stop littering or risk flash floods, says Council

The Harare City Council (HCC) has called on residents to avoid littering, saying the accumulated rubbish can block drainage systems during the current wet season.

The municipality said this exposes the public to dangers of flash flooding, which then leads to road traffic accidents and the emergence of waterborne diseases.

HCC spokesperson, Mr Michael Chideme, told The Sunday Mail that incorrect disposal of litter such as diapers, plastics and sanitary pads are clogging Harare’s drainage system, particularly in the central business district (CBD).

“Drain clearance is a continuous process. We continue to clean our drainages, therefore we urge the public to correctly dispose of their litter to avoid drain blockages,” he said.

“Items blocking the drainages include diapers, pet containers, plastics, sanitary pads and waste from vending activities.

“Poor and blocked drainage systems are causing artificial floods and pools of water in Harare’s streets, exposing residents to waterborne disease and road accidents.”
