NEW: Suspended ZIFA brews another shocker

Sports Reporter

JUST days after finally accepting the sanctions imposed on it by the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), the ZIFA board brewed another surprise on Friday by insisting they were the legitimate board that should be making football decisions.

The board is claiming that some of the decisions and national appointments “that are a preserve of the ZIFA board are being taken on behalf of ZIFA.”

One of such decisions is the appointment of Norman Mapeza to lead the national team at the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon in January.

“The board has learnt through various media articles that certain decisions that are a preserve of the ZIFA Board are being taken on behalf of ZIFA.

“The ZIFA Board would want to inform all stakeholders that any such decisions, contracts or agreements reached under the auspices of ZIFA are null and void ab initio and therefore of no legal effect,” said ZIFA in a statement.

ZIFA went on to warn that anyone who gets into contractual relationship with ZIFA in the absence or without express authority of the “legitimate ZIFA board” is doing so at their own risk.

The body said it will not honour any obligations arising out of such “agreements”.

“Of particular note is the fact that the ZIFA Board has not appointed any National Team Coach neither has it appointed any acting general secretary,” read part of the statement.

It is mind boggling in which capacity the ZIFA Board is writing such letters, given the fact that the entity has been suspended by the SRC for “gross maladministration.”

The latest statement also comes a few days after the suspended ZIFA board appeared to have backed down from a confronting the SRC.

The suspended ZIFA board now claims that its powers have been “illegally usurped” by the SRC, which they accuse of “clandestinely assuming the role of an interim committee and such is totally against FIFA and ZIFA statutes.”
