THE 2022 deadline for destruction of tobacco stalks has been extended to May 25 to allow all farmers to finish reaping their crop following changes in weather patterns during the season.

In an announcement, Tobacco Industry Marketing Board (TIMB), said the initial deadline lapsed on May 15, but was extended after the country experienced late rainfalls mid-way through the reaping stage after a prolonged dry spell as this caused the crop to re-green and hold ripening.

“As such, some farmers still need to finish reaping even after May 15. Against this backdrop, all tobacco farmers are notified that the 2022 deadline for destruction of tobacco stalls has been extended to May 25,” reads the announcement.

TIMB said tobacco growers are encouraged to destroy stalks immediately after harvesting and those who contravene regulations requiring the destruction of plants or prohibiting their planting between specified dates will face legislative penalties.
