NEW: Tobacco farmers rake in US$574m

Tobacco sales generated US$574 million as at day 45 of the marketing season, latest figures from the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) show.

A total of 186 million kg of golden leaf have been sold to date at an average US$3 per kg.

About 2,4 million bales have been sold since the beginning of the marketing season.

Auction floors have taken delivery of 15 million kg, while contractors account for 176 million kg.

The highest price achieved to date is US$6,10 per kg, while the lowest price is US$0,10.
