NEWLY-APPOINTED Gwanda Town Clerk, Priscilla Nkala, has pledged to improve service delivery and the town’s status saying the challenges being faced are temporary. She made the remarks during a welcome party held for her at the Gwanda Town Council Chambers on Friday. Nkala, who was the town chamber secretary, replaces Gilbert Mlilo who retired in May this year after serving the council for 26 years. She comes into office at a time when the municipality is financially constrained and also facing a myriad of challenges including failure to pay workers on time.
Nkala said despite all challenges the municipality was facing, there was light at the end of the tunnel. She said she was dedicated to improving service delivery and the state of the town.
“Our service delivery is languishing compared to our counterparts in other local authorities but I am still confident that this local authority can operate more efficiently and effectively in its key areas of service delivery. What is important is for us as the Gwanda community to work together as a team because support from stakeholders is crucial to developing our town. We appeal for support from the business community, residents and our leadership,” she said.
Nkala said the leadership in the town had a duty to play an advisory role and provide guidance to the municipality. She said the challenges facing the municipality were a passing phase.
“We want to see our town grow but this is only achievable if we continue having good relations and trusting each other. We still need to match the high standards of other towns,” Nkala said.
The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs in Matabeleland South Cde Abedinico Ncube said Nkala’s appointment shows that she had performed well in her previous posts and encouraged her to continue working hard.
“You are the one carrying Gwanda on your shoulders and the one driving development in the town. I appeal to you to deliver the required services to the residents of Gwanda. What we demand from you is a very big change towards the development of Gwanda.” he said.
