TOBACCO farmers in Ward 38 of Makoni District are set to receive training in proper ways of grading and packing of the crop from the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) in partnership with Agrirex as a way of increasing their capacity in sustainable production.
A farmers’ supervisor in the area, Ms Noriah Gashu, said the training programme is targeting both new and old farmers and will equip them with skills required in effectively marketing and selling the crop.
“Training farmers in grading and packaging tobacco is important as it helps farmers to prepare and present their crop effectively in readiness for the market. This then contributes significantly to the crop fetching good prices on the market,” said Ms Gashu.
She also called for the construction of irrigation facilities in the area as most farmers are relying on rainfall only for tobacco production.
Said Ms Gashu: “Without irrigation facilities, farmers here are not fully utilising their production capacity. The crop’s yield and quality is also enhanced when irrigated and can do well on the market. We are, therefore, appealing to Government and development partners for these facilities.”
