MORE than 35 volunteers representing the majority of 14 community radio stations that were licensed by Government last year have undergone training to equip them with skills to run the radio stations.
The volunteers were trained by media professionals and representatives of major broadcasting companies in the country at Chitsanga Hall in Chiredzi on Saturday.
The training is a precursor to Sunday’s World Radio Day celebrations to be held at Tshovani Stadium, which will be officiated by Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa.
She will also officially launch Avuxeni community radio station, which will broadcast in the Shangaan language.
Shangaan is the major language in the Lowveld.
Trainees were put through the media mill by experts drawn from Zimpapers Radio, ZBC, AB Communications, Zacras and Great Zimbabwe University.
Officially opening the training, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary Mr Nick Mangwana said Government wanted community radio stations to broadcast in local languages and promote the dominant culture in the various communities.
