A 40-year-old truck driver from Chivi has been sentenced to an effective two years in prison after being convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol along the Harare-Mutare Highway.
Patrick Tumbo, a resident of Mushambi village under Chief Watungwa in Chivi and an employee of Bastrans Trans, was sentenced by the Rusape Magistrates’ Court following his conviction on charges of drunk driving.
According to court records from the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the offence occurred on Tuesday afternoon.
Tumbo was driving a Shacman haulage truck towing a trailer along the Harare-Mutare Highway when he was spotted violating traffic regulations by police officers.
Police officers manning a roadblock stopped the vehicle after the driver failed to comply with road markings prohibiting overtaking and issued him with a traffic fine.
The officers later escorted Tumbo to a police station after noticing what they described as abnormal behaviour and suspecting that he was under the influence of alcohol.
A breathalyser test subsequently conducted revealed that Tumbo had an alcohol concentration of 212 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood, well above the legal limit of 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres.
Investigations established that he had been driving while intoxicated to such an extent that he was incapable of maintaining proper control of the vehicle.
