THE case of a Mutare gynecologist and obstetrician, Dr Miriam Kanyenze, who is alleged to have caused the death of Mrs Miriam Makunura from Nyanga in 2010, has taken a new twist with a Cuban doctor being fingered as the one who had negligently discharged his duties. Papers in possession of The Manica Post revealed that Dr Kanyenze professionally carried out a surgical operation on the late Mrs Makunura in July 2009, but a Cuban General Medical Officer, a Dr Lewis was the one who had failed to properly execute his duties.
In a letter from the registrar of the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe, the registrar, Mrs Josephine Mwakutuya dated August 19, 2013, addressed to Dr Kanyenze, it reads: “The chairman announced the judgment as follows: The committee has considered what you have submitted in mitigation and the committee also takes note of the very difficult conditions that you work under and you took responsibility of the actions of your GMO.
“You are thereby reprimanded. It is your responsibility to make sure that the patients under your care are taken care of properly.”
Dr Lewis, who used to work at Mutare Provincial Hospital, went back to Cuba before March 1, 2010 when Mrs Makunura went back to Mutare Provincial Hospital complaining of abdominal pains and bleeding problems.
She was diagnosed with cancer in her uterus and kidneys and died a few weeks later. After her death, all hell broke loose with Mr James Makunura, Miriam’s husband, accusing Dr Kanyenze of negligently causing his wife’s death.
He argued that “Dr Kanyenze unprofessionally failed to check the hypertension of my wife before discharging her after a surgical operation, leading to her death; therefore she is not professional in doing her job.”
However, investigations showed that it was Dr Lewis who had discharged Mrs Makunura from hospital and not Dr Kanyenze.
