A 22-year-old university student has approached the court seeking a maintenance fee from her father.

University of Zimbabwe student Miss Shalom Chirango appeared before the Harare Civil Court’s maintenance court appealing for US$200 monthly maintenance support from her father, Mr Isiah Chirango.

Miss Chirango indicated that she wanted the money to cover her tuition.

“I am a 22-year-old studying at the University of Zimbabwe and I want US$200 that covers my school fees and transport money.

“My older sister is the one who paid my last semester’s fees because my father gave me excuses. He last paid my fees when I was still in high school,” she said.

Mr Chirango, a Mashonaland Tobacco Company employee who also does some part-time jobs, said he earned US$200 per month and had two other children to take care of.

“The US$200 she is asking for is a lot because that is the amount l earn. I can only afford to give her US$100 per month as I have two other children,” he said.

After failing to prove the existence of the other two children, magistrate Talent Mutasa granted Miss Chirango’s request.

Her father will give her US$200 every month until she completes her studies.
