A call has been made for the engagement of more men in discussions and efforts to end gender-based violence (GBV).

The call comes at a time when the world has been marking 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence.

The commemorations, which started on 25 November, ran under the global theme: “Orange the World: End Violence against Women Now!”

Ms Ekenia Chifamba, director of Shamwari Yemwanasikana – a community-based non-governmental organisation that seeks to promote the rights and the empowerment of the girl child – bemoaned the lack of active participation by men in issues to do with the fight against gender-based violence.

“From the various activities that we conducted during the 16 days, I noticed that there is need for up-scaling the active participation by men in the fight against gender-based violence.

“Although we are having men who are doing wonders in the fight against GBV, I feel that the number of such men should increase,” Ms Chifamba said.

She also called for the expedition of the signing of the Marriage Bill, which she said will act as a panacea for most problems that are related to GBV.
