NEW: Uzumba man steals uncle’s cattle, gets 12-year sentence

IN a case of familial betrayal, a 24-year-old man from Uzumba has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after stealing his 76-year-old uncle’s two prized oxen.

It was proved that on the night of May 1, 2024 Farikeni Zisengwe went to his uncle Ernest Chijongwe’s homestead and made off with two cattle worth US$1000.

Zisengwe then transported the stolen livestock to his elder brother Moregood Zisengwe’s home in Jakopo village under Chief Mangwende, where they were kept as the younger Zisengwe sought buyers.

Within four days, one of the cattle was sold to Abraham Banda for $260, while the other was sold to Innocent Sithole for $320.

Police investigations led to Zisengwe’s arrest on July 1, 2024 in Mbare, Harare, where he had been hiding.

Mutawatawa magistrate Mr Obedience Matare presided sentenced Zisengwe to 12 years in prison, with six months suspended on the condition that he does not commit the same offence in the next five years.
