NEW: Victoria Falls water levels increase

WATER levels at Victoria Falls are increasing due to the rainfall received upstream, the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) has said.

In a statement, the ZRA said Victoria Falls had 764 m3/s (cubic meter per second), up from the 704 m3/s recorded on April 15 this year.

“The Zambezi River flows at Victoria Falls are increasing due to inflows from upstream,” said the authority. “However, the current levels are significantly lower than those recorded on the same date last year. Despite that, levels are 5.63 percent higher than what was recorded last week.”

ZRA said water levels at Lake Kariba continued to decline, resulting in the decrease of live storage water.

“The recession in the lake levels has persisted from the last update on April 10, 2024,” it said. “This is due to low inflow and reduced rainfall activity on and around the lake and in the Kariba catchment generally.

“Notably, the lake level is presently lower than it was during the same period last year. Moreover, the lake level is receding, which is contrary to expectations, as it typically rises during this time of the year.”
