NEW: Weekend accidents claim 8 in Manicaland

EIGHT people died in two separate fatal road accidents that occurred in Manicaland over the weekend.

 

In the first crash, six people died when a Mercedes Benz was involved in a head-on collision with a Nissan Caravan at the 6km peg along the Birchenough-Chipinge Road on Friday night around 11pm.

 

Two people were killed while 12 others were injured in another accident the following morning around 9:30am at the 18km peg along Nyanga-Rwenya Road.

 

Police confirmed both accidents.

 

Among the deceased in the first crash was the daughter of prominent Chipinge businessman Donmore Hlerema, popularly known as Dzonzai.

 

In a statement, police said: “Four people died on the spot, while 33 others sustained injuries when a Nissan Caravan and a Mercedes Benz were involved in a head-on collision at the 6km peg along the Birchenough-Chipinge Road. The injured were ferried to Birchenough Bridge Hospital, where two others succumbed to the injuries yesterday.”

 

“The Nissan Caravan was carrying 32 members of the African Apostolic Church while the Mercedes Benz had five passengers on board.

 

The second accident on Saturday morning occurred after a Mazda B2500 vehicle veered off the road and hit an escarpment.

 

“Police confirm a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on Saturday morning around 9:30am at the 18km peg along Nyanga-Rwenya Road in which two people were killed while 12 others were injured.

 

“A Mazda B2500 vehicle carrying 13 passengers veered off the road to the right and hit an escarpment. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Nyanga District Hospital mortuary for post mortem while one of the injured persons is admitted at the same hospital,” said police in a statement.
