NEW: Workers petition Govt to suspend PSMI management

Online Reporter

WORKERS at Premier Services Medical Investment (Pvt) Ltd, the corporate backbone of the Premier Services Medical Aid Society (PSMAS), have petitioned Government to suspend the PSMI board and its entire directorate for “gross mismanagement”.

There has been continuous and ongoing public outcry over a series of complaints citing poor management.

Public servants are not happy that their medical aid has been deemed “useless”.

Failure by PSMAS to meet deadlines to pay service providers and pharmacies, and growing controversy over board decisions to use medical aid subscriptions to buy gold mines and other businesses unrelated with the normal functions of a medical aid society, has resulted in the regulator ordering a forensic audit at PSMAS.

In a petition dated July 14, 2022 directed to different Government departments, including the Public Service Commission (PSC), workers requested Government to set up competent interim management to run PSMI throughout the audit period.

“PSMI leadership has continued to make wild and frivolous allegations of political overtake by the Government as witnessed by the press statements made by the vice board chair, Cecelia Alexander, despite three consecutive audit reports raising an alarm on the going concern status of the organisation.

“We pray that you immediately suspend the PSMI board and its entire directorate for gross mismanagement and dismal failure to allow forensic audit without hindrance and interference.

“We request that you put up competent interim management to run PSMI throughout the entire forensic audit period,” reads part of the petition.

The development also comes after reports the beleaguered medical aid company did not use proper banking channels for foreign currency transactions.

Sources privy to the development said at one time the company resorted to using private money transfer companies to send money to top employees, potentially prejudicing Government of potential revenue in tax.
