The prestigious New York University School of the Arts announced this week that it would be honouring one of its former students, Zimbabwean Danai Gurira, for her excellent contributions to the arts in the United States.
Tisch, as the university is commonly known as, has given birth to some leading Hollywood luminaries likeA�A� Martin Scorsese, Oliver Stone, Mahershala Ali, Spike Lee, Alec Baldwin, Billy Crystal, Cary Joji Fukunaga and Vince Gilligan.
Founded on August 17, 1965, Tisch is a training ground for artistes, scholars of the arts, filmmakers, and creative entrepreneurs. The school merges the technical training of a professional school with the academic resources of a major research university to immerse students in their intended artistic disciplines.
Gurira will be honoured alongside fellow Tisch acolyte and Hollywood star AndrA� Holland in a ceremony to be held on Monday at Cipriani 42nd Street.

Danai Gurira graduated from the Tisch Graduate Acting Programme. In addition to her television and film work, she has been recognised for her work as a playwright, which has earned her several prestigious theatre awards including two Helen Hayes awards, a Drama Desk Award and an NAACP Award. Her body of work includes the plays In the Continuum (2005), the Tony Award-nominated Eclipsed (2009), The Convert (2012) and Familiar (2015).
