ZIMBABWE got their Hockey Junior Women’s World Cup campaign to the best possible start as they beat Canada 2-1 in their opening encounter of the tournament on Friday.
First-half goals from Alexi Terblanche and Lilian Pope gave the team the advantage, which they put to full use with a solid defensive effort in the second.
The only blemish was that the team could not keep a clean sheet, as Canada breached Zimbabwe’s defence just five minutes from time.
It was one of the areas Zimbabwe coach Tendayi Maredza found to be worrying although he was pleased with the result and effort.
“We got too many yellow cards and now we have to shift players,” said Maredza.
“We also have to change our strategy, and that is one of the areas that we will have to work on before our next match.”
