Zimbabwe has joined the rest of Africa in commemorating the eighth Africa Anti-Corruption Day which seeks to commend the African Union’s role as whistle-blowers in the fight against corruption.
In a statement, Transparency International Zimbabwe (TIZ) and Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) said: “The Commemorations are reflecting the African Union Convention on Preventing and combatting Corruption (AUCPCC), which obliges State Parties to safeguard whistleblowers and maintain their anonymity.”

“The 2024 commemorations are celebrated under the theme ‘Effective Whistle Blowers Protection Mechanism: A Critical Tool in the Fight Against Corruption’.”
TIZ and ZLHR applauded the African Union for highlighting the significance of whistle-blowers in the fight against corruption, emphasising the need for effective protection mechanisms.

However, they expressed concern that Zimbabwe is yet to fully implement these provisions, despite some progress in the Public Interest Disclosure (Protection of Whistle Blowers) Bill of 2022.
TIZ and ZLHR reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating with the government and various anti-corruption agencies to combat corruption at all levels.
They emphasised the importance of celebrating and supporting the brave individuals who report corruption while emphasising the need to ensure their safety and anonymity.
