NEW: Major hospitals to be exempted from power interruptions

Major referral hospitals such as Parirenyatwa and Sally Mugabe that do not have solar systems will be exempted from power interruptions, while electricity pre-paid meters will be removed from all clinics and health facilities across the country.

Responding to questions from legislators on Wednesday, Health and Child Care Minister, Dr Douglas Mombeshora, said the Ministry of Energy and Power Development had been engaged and the arrangement will be effected soon.

“The problem is that our major hospitals like Parirenyatwa and Sally Mugabe hospitals have not been equipped with solar systems as a back-up. We have since agreed with the Ministry of Energy to ensure that the hospitals do not face power interruptions,” Dr Mombeshora said.

“Some clinics have prepaid meters and we agreed that prepaid electricity should be removed from health facilities because sometimes they may not have the money to buy electricity when they need it.”
