ONLY three drone operators in Zimbabwe are properly licensed, it has emerged.
Drones are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that include a ground-based controller and a system of communications with the UAV.
In recent years, drones have made their way into homes, and, in most cases, serve as entertainment for hobbyists.
They are also a vital tool for photographers.
Addressing journalists during a breakfast meeting in Harare on Wednesday, Mr Perry Hove, an official from the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ), said drones should only be operated by licensed persons.
“In accordance with the law, that is Statutory Instrument 271 of 2018, only licensed drone pilots are expected to use and operate a drone, and anyone who is not is breaching the law,” he said.
He said only three drone schools and three drone operators are licensed in Zimbabwe.
“We have registered three drone schools and three drone operators so far. CAAZ approval is required for ownership, importation and operation of drones; and only licensed personnel shall conduct drone operations,” said Mr Hove.
CAAZ regulates the ownership and usage of drones.
Whilst the potential for innovative use of drone technology is supported, the aviation authority ensures the effective and proportionate management of any potential risks.
