DRUG abuse has reached alarming levels in Chitungwiza and if left unchecked this might seriously destroy the lives of affected youth, a junior parliamentarian has said.
Zengeza West junior Member of Parliament and Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Province, Wesley Dhliwayo, said there is need for stakeholders to join forces to stop the vice.
He was speaking during the donation of ICT gadgets for youth at Chitungwiza Arts Centre on Wednesday.
“Issues of drug abuse in Chitungwiza have reached alarming levels, and it is against this background that stakeholders have joined forces to thwart the vice.
“I am shocked to hear some youths are taking drugs claiming to be relieving stress. However, many are taking them just for fun,” he said.
He proposed a massive campaign against drug abuse in areas such as Unit D, Unit C and in Unit L.
The computers and chairs that were donated were sourced by the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation, and are meant to ensure youth in Chitungwiza stay focused and engaged.
The donation was made in partnership with Chitungwiza Municipality, Zimbabwe Youth Council and Plan International.
