The Government has taken bold steps to revitalise the country’s fisheries sector and ensure the sustainable management of its aquatic resources.
The Blue Economy initiative, a key component of this strategy, aims to promote responsible fishing practices and protect the delicate ecosystem of Lake Kariba, a vital source of livelihoods for many Zimbabweans.
Speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing stakeholders workshop to define priority issues for the development of the national blue economy for Zimbabwe, Director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Resources Department Mr Milton Makumbe emphasised the importance of the Blue Economy initiative in addressing the pressing challenges facing the kapenta industry.
“The Blue Economy initiative provides a framework for sustainable fishing practices, which are essential for the long-term health of our aquatic ecosystems,” Mr Makumbe said.
“By promoting responsible fishing techniques and reducing overfishing, we can ensure that future generations can continue to benefit from the resources of Lake Kariba.”
Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Kapenta Producers Association, Mr Chartwell Tanga acknowledged the need for urgent action to restore the declining fish and kapenta stocks.
“The Blue Economy initiative offers a beacon of hope for the kapenta industry,” Mr Tanga said.
“By implementing sustainable fishing practices, we can revitalize the industry and secure the livelihoods of thousands of people who depend on it.”
Mr Tanga also highlighted the importance of addressing illegal fishing activities, which have contributed to the depletion of fish stocks.
“We must work together to combat illegal fishing and ensure that all stakeholders adhere to sustainable fishing regulations,” he said.
“By taking a collaborative approach, we can restore the health of Lake Kariba and ensure a prosperous future for the kapenta industry.”
The Blue Economy initiative represents a significant step forward in Zimbabwe’s efforts to achieve sustainable development and protect its natural resources.
By promoting responsible fishing practices and investing in aquaculture, the Government aims to create a thriving fisheries sector that benefits both the environment and the economy.
