NEW: Zimbabwe to compensate unpaid landmine victims

The Zimbabwean Government has committed to compensate all landmine victims who are yet to receive financial support, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Edgar Moyo has announced.

Speaking during the second day of the National Dialogue on Humanitarian Demining and Victim Assistance, Minister Moyo said landmine accidents leave long-term impact on victims, hence the need for both financial and emotional support.

“We recognise that existing policies do not fully address direct referrals for mine victims but we will ensure these issues are covered in future policy reviews,” he said.

“A detailed database will help us plan and implement effective programmes for persons with disabilities, particularly those affected by landmines.

“Victim assistance encompasses psychological support, medical care, access to assistive devices and livelihood opportunities—these key areas will be addressed in this dialogue.”

Minister Moyo called for a collective effort towards a mine-free future.

“I urge all of us to work towards a future without landmines and with well-coordinated assistance programmes for victims,” he said.

“We are reminded that the consequences of war can extend for generations.

“The anti-personnel mines that have maimed or taken lives were laid more than 50 years ago.”
