A 33-year-old South Africa-based Zimbabwean man was arrested by the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation unit on allegations of using manufactured permanent residence permit to earn a top post at North West Development Corporations.
Kudakwashe Mpofu was taken to Mmabatho Magistrates’ Court charged with fraud.
Mpofu was denied bail and is expected to appear before the Specialised Commercial Crime Court sitting in Mmabatho on March 19, 2025 for trial.
It is alleged that sometime in March 2021, the North West Development Corporations advertised a position of Asset Manager based in Head Office in Mafikeng.
Investigations indicate that Mpofu applied for the said position and attached all the necessary documents, including his fraudulent permanent residence permit.
Mpofu was successfully appointed to the position on May 1, 2021 and subsequent to that appointment he was later appointed as Chief Financial Officer of the entity on June 1, 2023.
Following his arrest, investigations revealed that the permanent residence permit submitted by Mpofu was never issued by the department of South African Home Affairs.
During the bail application, the State opposed the release of Mpofu saying he was a flight risk and might evade trial.
The State further presented an affidavit from an official of the Department of Home Affairs, which confirmed that the permanent residence permit was never issued by Home Affairs and it was fraudulent.
