ZIMBABWEANS have expressed their opinions over the high number of road traffic accidents occurring in the country.

Participating in opinion polls and surveys published by The Sunday Mail on its social media platforms, Zimbabweans selected speeding as the leading cause of accidents.

Dubbed Zimpapers Safe Driving Campaign, the initiative is meant to promote the values of safe driving on the roads.

Asked about the leading cause of road accidents in a recent poll conducted on The Sunday Mail’s X handle, 62 percent of participants cited speeding, while 38 percent attributed accidents to distracted driving.

The majority of respondents identified commuter omnibuses as the primary mode of transport responsible for most road accidents.

At 67 percent, commuter omnibuses were identified as the leading transport model responsible for accidents.

They were followed by buses (18 percent), private vehicles (9 percent) and bicycles (6 percent).

Facebook users blamed accidents on unskilled drivers.

Regarding measures to effectively reduce road accidents, half of the respondents emphasised the need for good road infrastructure, while 30 percent called for strict law enforcement.

At least 15 percent advocated for improved driver education, while five percent suggested awareness campaigns.

Statistics show that a road accident occurs in Zimbabwe every 15 minutes, with most of these attributed to human error.
