THE Zimbabwe Revenue Authority has contributed US$39,8 billion to state coffers over the past 2o years, as such playing a critical role in fighting the economic sanctions imposed by the West, Finance and Economic Development Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube, has said.
The authority has played a key role in domestic resource mobilisation after the economic sanctions clogged international lines of credit.
He made the remarks during the taxman’s 20th Anniversary celebrations on Wednesday evening.
“Coincidentally, the birth of the Zimra in 2001 coincided with the imposition of sanctions by western imperial forces on Zimbabwe which took effect in 2002 resulting in lines of credit being cut off by many development partners.
“Zimra only missed the revenue target by a whisker in 2001, 2009, 2014 and 2016 and this has been as a result of different internal shocks that the Authority has had to grapple with over the said years,” said Professor Ncube.
“But, cumulatively Zimra managed to contribute a total of US$39,8 billion to the state from 2001 to 2020.”
Since its establishment, Zimra has consistently provided over 90 percent of the country’s budgetary resources annually.
