The People’s Own Savings Bank (POSB) says it has enough foreign currency to disburse the United States dollar bonuses to civil servants and pensioners, which was paid out by Government earlier this month.
This follows an influx of customers to POSB branches across the country for cash withdrawals, a development that has both increased the risk of Covid-19 outbreaks and strained service delivery.
In a statement on Thursday, POSB said while it is extending operating hours and beefing up staff to deal with the influx, customers are urged to remain calm as US dollar cash payouts are guaranteed.
“POSB would like to advise its valued customers that the bank has sufficient foreign currency to meet all cash disbursements relating to the US dollar bonuses paid out by the Government of Zimbabwe between November 30 and December 3 2021,” reads the statement.
“The bank further wishes to advise that the close timing of these pay dates triggered an unprecedented influx of customers to POSB branches for cash withdrawals resulting in significant strain on service delivery.”
The situation has been further compounded by the current wave of Covid-19 infections.
Most banks have been significantly affected by the huge number of civil servants seeking to make cash withdrawals.
