NEW: ZMC inundated with complaints against influencers denigrating women

THE Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) is overwhelmed with complaints lodged against some social media content creators who are denigrating women.

Human rights activists say the trend is stopping women from freely participating on these platforms.

Speaking at a media engagement meeting on Tuesday, ZMC executive secretary Mr Godwin Phiri said some social media activities are sexualising women.

“As the Zimbabwe Media Commission, we have received a lot of complaints,” he said.

“It’s now a full-time profession for those on social media to denigrate women every day. I don’t want to start mentioning names. There are complaints that we are already handling.

“People have followers, people have become kings, people have become leaders of the youth because they have chosen a certain narrative where they will never see anything positive in women.”

Meanwhile, Mr Phiri highlighted how sexual abuse and harassment are common in Zimbabwean newsrooms.
