New ZNCC Matabeleland chair vows to support SMEs, boost regional growth

NEWLY elected Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) Matabeleland Region chairman, Mr Thomas Gwatida, has pledged to hit the ground running, recognising the growing contribution of the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) sector to economic development.

He has committed himself to supporting the sector in realising its full potential.

Having previously served as vice chairman, Mr Gwatida has vowed to work for the advancement of the region as he assumes his new role.

“I want to thank the ZNCC members for the trust they have placed in me by elevating me from vice chairman last term to chairman this term. I promise to work tirelessly, to ensure the business community is well represented and equipped with the knowledge necessary for growth and sustainability. With 23 years of experience in business, I am determined to restore the chamber’s former glory,” said Mr Gwatida.

With over two decades of business experience in Matabeleland South Province, Mr Gwatida has received several accolades from various organisations, including the ZNCC.

He is the director of Kylsat Investments, trading as Mars Foods, which operates branches in Bulawayo, Gwanda, Collen Bawn and Zvishavane. He is also the founder and chairman of the Gwanda Business Association and serves as a committee member of the Matabeleland South Provincial Investment Committee.

Mr Gwatida acknowledged the challenges facing the business sector, noting that approximately 65 percent of the economy is driven by SMEs, the majority of which operate informally.

“I want the chamber to bridge the gap between policy and SMEs in the region, ensuring that formalisation is driven by motivation rather than fear.

“The distribution channels for goods and services are hindering business growth and, limited access to both local and international markets is affecting our region more than others.”

Meanwhile, the ZNCC is set to host its highly anticipated annual congress from June 25 to 28 in Victoria Falls. The event aims to foster inclusive economic growth, improve the business environment, and strengthen collaboration between the public and private sectors.

The congress will also feature the National Business Awards and the Presidential Dinner on June 26, alongside high-level sessions, networking opportunities, and exhibitions designed to stimulate dialogue and partnerships.

The 2025 ZNCC Congress represents a critical platform for Zimbabwe’s business sector, to engage with policymakers and partners in navigating economic challenges and unlocking future growth opportunities.

The Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit, membership-based organisation that provides services designed to support its members in business development.

As an independent body, the ZNCC has represented the interests of its members for over 100 years, particularly through advocacy. It focuses on business empowerment as a key driver of economic growth.

The ZNCC also aspires to be a leader in national business development and a vital communication channel between the business community and various authorities in Zimbabwe.
