NEW: Zupco slashes fares

The Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (Zupco) has slashed fares with immediate effect.

It also redirected its entire inter-city fleet to urban routes to help tackle transport shortages.

In a statement on Tuesday, Zupco said: “All intercity buses will be redeployed to urban operations to increase carrying capacity and efficiency.

“We will be operating under the curfew guidelines. Our buses will be deployed as peer-scheduled timetables.”

For bus fares, a distance between 0 to 20 kilometres, which was $60, has been reduced to $40, while distances between 21km to 30km are now $60, down from $90.

Distances between 31km to 40km now attract $80 from the previous $110.

Commuter omnibuses will charge $60, down from $80, for a distance of 0 to 20km.

A distance of between 21km to 30km will now charge $80 from $120.
