In a significant step for Zimbabwean women’s football, Sibusisiwe Rugwevera was elected to the Zimbabwe Women’s Super League (ZWSL) board following elections held in Harare this Friday.
The appointment signals not just a change in leadership, but a bold new vision for the women’s game.
A passionate advocate for youth development and women’s sport, Rugwevera is best known as the co-founder of Mpopoma Sports Academy (Mposa), an institution she built alongside her husband, James Rugwevera—a towering figure in Zimbabwean sport and a name synonymous with grassroots excellence.
In her post-election remarks, Rugwevera struck a tone of quiet authority and clear intent.
“We must build a league that is both competitive and commercially viable. Women’s football deserves better structures, better support, and a clear career pathing for young girls to dream and achieve,” said the Mposa board member (Talent Development and Marketing).
Her vision revolves around ethical standards, Corporate Governance and professionalising the women’s game, strengthening club governance, and driving community-based talent development—pillars she believes will elevate the league and draw greater investment into women’s sport.
As the ZWSL looks to revitalise its domestic footprint and widen its international relevance, Rugwevera’s presence on the board offers a refreshing blend of administrative acumen, grassroots authenticity, and bold ambition.
