CLIVE Nguru — the reigning Chapman Club Champion — won his second title of the season when he was crowned the Champion of Champions winner at Warren Hills at the weekend.Nguru has won the Mashonaland South Amateur Championships and has finished in the top five on several occasions.
The Chapman golfer was pleased with the win and is hopeful that his good form will continue into the next events.
“The competition was very tough but I am happy that I managed to win,” said Nguru.
“There was a lot of pressure from the other players who fought all the way to the final round. I give all the credit to the hard work I have put into my game as I wanted to win badly and I am happy,” Nguru said.
Nguru replaced Garry Thompson, who had won the event in 2004 before it disappeared from the calendar.
Thompson did not defend his title.
To win the Champion of Champions Nguru carded rounds of 74 and 69 for a gross score of 143. Nguru beat the challenge of several other top players and his nearest challenger Mhere, who was playing off six handicap. Warren Hills champion Steven Hazangwi playing off three handicap was on third place in the Championship Division.
Nguru, who had been tipped to win the event lived to his billing.
Tournament marketing and competition co-ordinator, Evelyne Maisvoreva, said she was touched by the high level of competition.
“The levels of competition exhibited were very high and it was difficult to predict who will win the event as the field had some good golfers,” said Maisvoreva.
