Nguru out to retain title

repeat the feat in this year’s competition.
The 72-hole tournament has drawn 65 top amateurs from this country and Chapman-based golfer Nguru is the major draw card.
Nguru, with several amateur titles to his name, said he is looking forward to the tournament and is well prepared for the challenge.
“I have practised very well for the tournament and I hope I can manage to defend the title.
“If I play well this morning, I will try and go all the way to win it.
“There are several top contenders but I will do my best. My drive and short game is brilliant so I think I will do well.
“Playing 36-holes a day will not be very hard as it is what we are used to in all the competitions we play.
“I was impressed with the course’s condition as the greens are good and the fairway is well maintained so I will blame my elf if I fail to make it.
“The greens here are just similar to those at my home course Chapman so they will give me an urge.
“I have played the course before as a junior golfer and I am quite familiar with it and the practise rounds I had will help me,” said Nguru.
He believes everyone has a chance to snatch the title from him but singled out Christian Mbanga, the current Chapman champion, as his major threat.
“We have good golfers in the field but I think Mbanga is in good form.
“He is playing well considering how he played at the club championships,” he added.
Ben Follet-Smith, who has bagged several titles this year, is also a dark-horse.
Other golfers like Kyaman Mandhu, Munashe Madhodha, Bret Krog and Mathew Ncube are also expected to give Nguru a good run for his money.
The Matabeleland Amateur Championships tees off this morning and the golfers will play 36-holes and they will finish off tomorrow with the other 36-holes.
