Hockey league continues

is in a sub-standard state after failure to refurbish the facility for over a decade.
The league, which has attracted players from all Harare clubs, is expected to start at 2pm.
Some of the new teams to the league include Mabvuku (men), Hockey Queens (women) and Birds (women).
Secretary-general for Harare Hockey Board, Tapiwa Mafi, said they are happy that the league has commenced after a number of years.
“We are happy that the league has commenced and the two top Harare clubs will get a chance to play against top clubs from the country’s other provinces. The winning men and women’s clubs will then represent Zimbabwe at the African Cup of Club Championship, which involves all top clubs from across Africa to be held in December this year.
“We have not had a Harare Field Hockey League for several years now, therefore there is a lot of excitement around this year’s resurgence as it will see new derbies being established as well as reigniting the non-age specific atmosphere at the venue,” Mafi said.
In the women’s matches, Drifters beat Mambas 4-2 in their opening match and are expected to play Eradicators tomorrow.
Former national team coach Louis Mnyama said that the teams have a lot of work to do.
“All the teams are trying to understand the game. There is still a lot to work on and we hope to see an improvement in today’s match as the teams enter the second week.”

Men:  Old Hararians v Eradicators (today, 2pm).
Women: Scorpions v Hockey Queens (today 3:30pm).
Tomorrow — Men: Sunrise v Hockey Club,  Mabvuku v Old Georgians, Enthusiasts v Universals.
Women: Mamba v Cargards, Eradicators v Drifters.
