Nhira edges closer to glory

Zimbabwean crooner Brian Nhira this week moved a step closer to a career-defining victory in popular US singing competition, The Voice, after he made it to the final eight of the reality show.

Nhira, who took the singing competition by storm last month after a soulful rendition of Pharell Williamas smash hit song Happy, has coasted through the first stages of the competition despite switching from the mentorship of Pharell to Adam Levine.

The final knockout round to decide the final eight to perform at the showas live shows was held on Tuesday, with Nhira going head to head with fellow Team Adam Levine member Nate Butler in the first knockout round of the night. Levine decided to go with Nhira after his explosive performance of Bruno Marsa Grenade.

The son of a travelling church minister whose parents moved to the United States from Zimbabwe to pursue educational opportunities, Brian started singing at an early age in church. Although he is an accomplished musician in his own right who has released a number of songs in the past few years, The Voice represents his best chance at superstardom thus far.

Nhira now moves to the final stage of the competition where success is determined by public support.

The showas voting system is unique, with fans of the show given the ability to vote for their favourite artistes by purchasing the studio versions of the songs that they perform on the live show each week via the iTunes Store.

Alternative methods of voting can be done through toll-free phone calls, text messaging the showas app, and through online votes via NBC.com and Facebook. Each method is limited to 10 votes per user.

The winner of each season, receives $100 000 and a record deal with Universal Music Group.
