The relations between Nigeria and Zimbabwe are deep-rooted as they date back to the days the African state was engaged with Southern African countries’ liberation movements, Nigerian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Mamman Nuhu has said. Speaking at Nigeria’s 53rd independence anniversary celebrations in Harare on Wednesday Ambassador Nuhu said the relationship would play a pivotal role in solidifying diplomatic ties.
“Nigeria was considered as a front-line state notwithstanding her location in West Africa far away from the theatre of the liberation wars. Relations between the two countries have continued to wax stronger since independence,” he said.
He said the good relations could be proven by bilateral agreements signed between Zimbabwe and Nigeria since independence.
“It culminated in the early establishment of the Nigeria-Zimbabwe Joint Commission and the signing of a number of bilateral agreements. The ongoing exchanges in the area of tourism will be formalised by the signing of the memorandum of understanding on tourism which is currently under consideration.
“Nigeria fully participated in the maiden Harare Carnival and the two cultural teams that came from Nigeria along with the Nigerian community in Zimbabwe did Nigeria proud. “I would like to thank the outgoing chair of the Zimbabwe-Nigeria Association Minister of Health (and Child Care), Dr David Parirenyatwa, for the efforts he deployed in steering the affairs,” he said.
Ambassador Nuhu congratulated the Government and the people of Zimbabwe for conducting successful harmonised elections.
The celebrations were attended by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Cde Christopher Mustvangwa, members of the Zimbabwe Nigeria Association and members of the Nigerian Community in Zimbabwe.
