Zimbabwe Amateur Boxing Association (Zaba) technical director Petros Masiyambumbi yesterday said: “We have nine boxers two of whom are females who will be travelling to Botswana for the African Championships and we are looking at camping in Bulawayo on Thursday ahead of our departure for Botswana on Friday.

“At this stage I can say our preparations are at a very advanced stage.”

The Zaba technical director also said sponsors were promising and they were hopeful that by their departure day, all would have fallen into place.

“We are getting positive responses from individuals and companies who are willing to sponsor their province’s representatives and some who are ready to sponsor the team.

“For instance Revival Motorways in Bulawayo has shown interest in sponsoring the two boxers from the city,” he said.

Of the nine travelling boxers, Bulawayo will provide two boxers, Milton Moyo and Brighton Masiyambumbi who recently shone in the Lobengula boxing tournament, Harare will have two boxers, Steven Masiyambumbi and Chidziwo, Hwange will provide Ibrahim Magare, the Zimbabwe National Army will be represented by Beavan Nyamondera, Triangle will have Elaston Chiweshe, Masvingo will have Kudzanai Tavengwa and there will also be Kudzanai Huni who is based in the United Kingdom.

Masiyambumbi said Huni was expected in Harare yesterday evening. He has sponsored himself for the trip.

Four coaches and administrators will accompany the team.

Masiyambumbi said he had faith in the boxers and expected a good showing by them on national duty.
