Nine killed along Harare-Chirundu highway

NINE people were killed, while four others were seriously injured in two separate road accidents along Harare-Chirundu Highway on Sunday. In the first accident, six people died on the spot when a Toyota Ipsum collided with a Toyota Rav 4 at the 64-kolimetre peg in the Mapinga Escarpment.

Three passengers were injured and were taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital. According to a police source, the Mapinga accident occurred around 5pm when the Toyota Ipsum registration number ADP 0172 collided with the Toyota Rev 4. It is not yet known how many people were in the Ipsum, but it is believed the majority of people who perished were from the vehicle.
“Six people died on the spot while two others sustained serious injuries, but they are in a stable condition,” said a source. “The deceased were taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital mortuary.”

Two of the injured were taken to Harare Central Hospital owing to the seriousness of their condition.
The second accident occurred near the 24km peg along the Harare-Chirundu Highway around 7am on Sunday after the driver of the vehicle failed to negotiate a curve, resulting in the vehicle veering off the road and overturning. It landed on its side, killing three people on the spot, while two others sustained injuries.
