NINE new schools have opened in Shamva District since 2024, bringing relief to thousands of learners who previously endured long walks to the nearest school or studied under trees and makeshift structures.
The new schools have been strategically established across resettlement areas, communal lands and mining communities, particularly in Karara, Mandimu, Madziwa and Chakonda, where pupils had to travel more than 10km to access education.
This development is part of a wider effort to address growing enrolment figures and infrastructure gaps, especially at Early Childhood Development (ECD) and primary school levels.
The addition of the nine institutions brings the total number of registered schools in Shamva to 51 primary and 29 secondary schools.
Within the Chaminuka Rural District Council area, there are now 47 primary and 24 secondary schools.
The district also has three mission schools, one government school and three Zimbabwe Foundation for Education with Production (ZIMFEP) schools.
Independent and private colleges number 83.
Shamva District schools inspector Mrs Sarudzai Magaya described the development as a “quiet revolution” in education delivery.
